Capernaum (Cafarnaúm)

A movie about human rights and children

Nadine Labaki

This is a shocking movie with very heavy scenes about poor people, parental irresponsibility and childhood suffering. A 12 years old “adult” boy has his journey in a very poor and chaotic city named Capernaum.

Minimal human rights, parental obligations, negligence, poor and lack of structured surroundings and naturalization of child abandonment is the outlining content which shows how we as human beings can have a very complex life due to the simple fact other people (in this case their parents) basically do not care.

Illegal migration, forced labour, people smugglers and human traffickers mixed with genuine feeling of care and mutual help in this extraordinary movie.

The ongoing discussion about abortion in several supreme courts around the world, parenthood and responsibility, social inequalities are inside of this plot in which after being convicted of a crime, a Lebanese boy sues his parents for giving him (a miserable) life.
